30-Day Gratitude Journal- Day 17

Wells Built Museum
Today, we arrived in Orlando, Florida for their official celebration of Juneteenth. For those of you who are not aware of this 'holiday', it is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

The date, June 19th, commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas  a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment,
self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society. (http://www.juneteenth.com/).

So, in keeping with that theme, here are some things that I am grateful for:

1) Safe travels to Orlando, FL, to attend the Junteenth Festival.

2)  Those of us who recognize and appreciate the struggle of the ones who blazed many trails before us, so that we now have more 'freedom' to do the things that we desire.

3) The beautiful artifacts and artworks that are displayed in the wells Built Museum, showcasing the richness of our heritage.

4) The freedom to enjoy the good local talent here. The local talent here in Orlando is fantastic. (Sending shout outs to Michael Mack and Six Nine for bringing down the house)

5) Food, food and more food. Delicious!
