I’ve heard from several of you about writing out your vision. You’re having a hard time seeing your vision, so how can you write what you don’t see? Ok, let’s see if I can help you with this.
Lets go back a minute to that thing called passion. Each of us has something that we are passionate about, that we really love to do. Your passion or what you love to do is specifically for you and is neither right nor wrong. You have those passions for a reason. That is why we are all so different and have different desires and needs. So, sit back for a moment and think about all of the things that you really love to do. Now make a list of them on paper, so that you can see them. Don’t try to edit your thoughts or what you write. Just write what comes to mind.
I will start with listing my own passions and the things that I really love doing. And these things have always been what I love doing. I just didn’t understand how they fit into the bigger vision for my life until recently. Lets take a look at the list:
1. Reading- I love to read, and can just sit and read for hours and hours. I can read a complete novel in a day. But here’s the catch. I’m only drawn to certain reading materials, which is quite evident if you saw my book and magazine collections:
a. The Bible
b. Motivational and self-help books.
c. Books about women who have overcome challenges to live their dreams and accomplish the things their hearts desire whether those things are finding true love, walking away from a 9-5 to really do what they want to do, taking risks or starting their own business. I love, love, love these types of books, which include fictional or non-fictional novels.
d. Magazines- Money, Black Enterprise, Oprah, Essence, Inc, Fast Company, Fortune, etc.
e. Websites- Forbes.com, Oprah, Essence and Blogs written by females who are motivating and provide inspiring information.
2. Movies- I love movies that are like the books that I read. I’d rather watch movies, than TV. I’m not much of a reality show fan, so I avoid them at all cost. But there is one that I really like and make sure that I try to catch it every week and that is Dance Your A$$ Off . Very inspiring and motivating.
3. Chatting with others. Now when I say chatting, I don’t mean idle chit chat. Anyone who has been around me long enough, know that I like to get people to talk about themselves and what they aspire to do with their lives. I do that with family, friends, coworkers, etc. I have such a desire to see others live their dreams. I am always moved when I see people do what they love to do. That always warms my heart.
4. Giving advice- People often come to me seeking my advice or my opinion on something. I am always happy to listen and provide feedback. I’m not a therapist and no, I don’t try to help people with overcoming their past, relationships, etc. Those issues call for more help than I can give them. What I do offer is advice and opinions to those who have made the decision to move forward and create a better life for themselves.
5. Traveling- I love to visit places where I’ve never been and even one where I absolutely love to visit every chance that I get and that is NYC. Because I visit so many places in the novels that I read and the movies that I watch, it blesses me even more when I can actually visit them.
Now those 5 things listed above, are what I am truly passionate about and try to incorporate them into my daily routines as often as possible (except traveling of course). And I would do them, even if I never earned one penny from them (although earning money is a definite bonus).
So go ahead and list all of the things that you really love to do. Again, do not try to edit what you write. Be honest with yourself. It's your life we're talking about here.
In the next post, we'll list our natural talents and gifts. These are the gifts that God created us with. At the end of these posts, you'll begin to see a pattern or a road map for your vision and purpose. Stay tuned!
